Hubert Davis promoted to North Carolina head coach in 2021 succession from Roy Williams

Hubert Davis was named head coach of the University of North Carolina men's basketball team on April 1, 2021, following Roy Williams's retirement announcement the same day.[1][2]

Williams coached the Tar Heels for 33 seasons from 1988 to 2021, securing NCAA Division I men's basketball championships in 1993, 2005 and 2009.[3]

In his debut 2021-22 season, Davis led North Carolina to a 29-8 record, the ACC regular-season title and the NCAA championship game, losing 72-69 to Kansas on April 4, 2022, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.[4][5]

The Tar Heels, under Davis, posted a 29-8 record in the 2023-24 season, won another ACC regular-season championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 before a 89-87 loss to Alabama on March 23, 2024.[6][7]

Davis, who played for UNC from 1988 to 1992 and served as an assistant coach under Williams for 11 seasons, remains the program's head coach.[8]

North Carolina plays home games at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which seats 20,711 fans.[9]

Among UNC's notable alumni is Kenny Smith, who played for the Tar Heels from 1984 to 1987, earned ACC Player of the Year honors in 1986 and later became a television basketball analyst.[10]
