Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III visited Washington, D.C., during Memorial Day weekend to highlight the sacrifices of U.S. military personnel. The son of two Army veterans, he toured the Poppy Wall of Honor on the National Mall, where more than 600,000 poppies represent service members who died in defense of the country.

Griffin described the exhibit’s addition of family-provided stories about the fallen as a way to keep their experiences visible. He noted that many Americans enjoy barbecues and time off during the holiday and stressed that the weekend exists because of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Griffin said the military community sometimes feels its contributions are overlooked. He encouraged people to pause for moments of silence, share stories of those lost, and recognize that the holiday centers on honoring the dead rather than leisure activities.

Griffin credited lessons from veterans, including discipline and completing tasks once begun, with shaping his approach to football and daily life. He added that applying such standards across society would help the country maintain its strength.
